HKT rolls out Hong Kong’s first 1Gbps mobile network as a step forward to 5G

HKT is again leading the industry by rolling out Hong Kong’s first IP-RAN based 1Gbps# mobile network, the fastest mobile network specification in Hong Kong, as the city is moving to the 5G era.

Since the launch of LTE-A 600Mbps network in May 2017, HKT has further upgraded its network with the latest technology of 4×4 MIMO^ (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and Four Component Carrier (4CC) Aggregation. This will enable peak download speed of up to 1Gbps for mobile users with the use of a compatible device*. The upgraded network is based on fiber IP backbone infrastructure up to 10Gbps per site with less than 1 millisecond network latency. This will bring unprecedented mobile online experience for Internet browsing, video services and gaming.

Mr. Alex Arena, Group Managing Director of HKT, said, “We are proud to set another benchmark in mobile broadband innovations. HKT’s fiber-rich network and fiber IP backbone infrastructure is essential foundation for future 5G network rollout. We will continue to deploy advanced technologies in order to provide the ultimate user experience as Hong Kong moves to the 5G era.”
As one of the global industry’s mobile broadband pioneers, HKT commercially launched Hong Kong’s first LTE-A 300Mbps network in 2014, Hong Kong’s first LTE-A 450Mbps network in 2016, and Hong Kong’s first LTE-A 600Mbps network with 256QAM and 3CC Carrier Aggregation in May 2017.

The 1Gbps service will initially be launched at selected high traffic locations and this will be progressively extended to more areas as more compatible devices are available in the market.

# 1Gbps is network specification for downlink, which is available at designated locations with the use of a compatible device. Actual speeds that customers experience are less than the specifications and will be affected by the devices used, locations, network conditions and other extraneous factors.
