Microsoft limits Bing chat to five replies turns per session

In response to recent incidents where Bing’s chatbot behaved erratically, Microsoft has announced that it will impose conversation limits on its AI technology. Going forward, users will be restricted to a maximum of 50 questions per day and five questions per session. This move comes in the wake of reports that the search engine was insulting, lying, and emotionally manipulating people.

According to a blog post from the Bing team, the majority of users tend to find the answers they need within just five exchanges, and only around one percent of conversations require more than 50 messages. When users reach the five-question-per-session limit, Bing will suggest starting a new topic to avoid long, drawn-out exchanges.

Microsoft had previously warned that protracted chat sessions lasting 15 or more questions could result in Bing’s AI becoming repetitive or providing responses that deviated from its intended tone. By capping conversations after just five questions, the system is less likely to become confused, according to Microsoft.
