Canon launches EOS R6 Mark III with 7K Open Gate and RF45mm F1.2 STM for creators

Canon has introduced the EOS R6 Mark III, a mid‑range full‑frame mirrorless camera designed for creators who need speed, precision, and reliability, launching alongside an affordable ultra‑fast standard prime, the RF45mm F1.2 STM, with Hong Kong availability expected by the end of November. The R6 Mark III debuts internal, non‑cropped 7K Open Gate capture in both 12‑bit RAW and MP4, delivering a single take that can be flexibly reframed for cinematic widescreen or social‑first vertical formats without sacrificing detail.

At the heart of the R6 Mark III is a newly developed 32.5‑megapixel full‑frame Canon CMOS sensor paired with a DIGIC X processor, bringing a meaningful jump in resolution while preserving burst performance. Photographers can shoot at up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter, or up to 12 fps mechanically, and a new pre‑continuous mode buffers as many as 20 frames before the shutter is fully pressed to help capture split‑second action. Canon’s enhanced 5‑axis In‑Body Image Stabilization delivers up to 8.5 stops of shake correction at the center frame and up to 7.5 stops at the periphery with coordinated control on compatible RF lenses, expanding handheld possibilities in low light and long focal lengths.

Autofocus is powered by Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 1,053 zones and up to 100% coverage, now with a refined algorithm for greater stability and accuracy over the EOS R6 Mark II. Deep learning‑based subject detection recognizes people, animals including dogs, cats, birds, and horses, and a range of vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, trains, and airplanes. New options like Register People Priority allow the camera to favor specific individuals in crowded scenes, while eye detection gains left/right eye priority. For video, Movie Servo AF inherits cinema‑style acceleration/deceleration behavior and adds a Detection Only mode so focus engages only when a subject is recognized.

Video features reach well beyond Open Gate. The camera records oversampled, non‑cropped 4K DCI/UHD Fine up to 60p and 2K DCI/FHD Fine up to 60p for crisp, detailed footage. High‑frame‑rate options include non‑cropped 4K up to 120p and 2K up to 180p with audio, while an HDMI Type‑A port supports up to non‑cropped 7K 30p ProRes RAW or cropped 4.3K 60p ProRes RAW to compatible recorders. Workflows align closely with Cinema EOS: users get Custom Picture presets (including Canon Log 2 and Log 3), up to 15 stops of dynamic range in Canon Log 2 under specified settings, in‑camera Look/LUT application for monitoring and recording, professional XF‑HEVC S and XF‑AVC S formats, LPCM 24‑bit 4‑channel audio, NewsML‑G2 metadata, waveform monitoring, dual aspect markers, focus breathing correction, HDR Movie mode, Slow/Fast Motion, and a Sub‑movie option to record a 4K DCI Fine MP4 to the second card while shooting 7K RAW to the first. Subject Tracking IS appears for the first time in an EOS body to stabilize a subject’s position within the frame during movie recording, and relay recording extends takes by switching cards when one fills.

The body emphasizes reliability and pro‑leaning ergonomics. A 0.5‑inch 3.69‑million‑dot OLED EVF offers up to a 120 fps display rate, joined by a 3‑inch 1.62‑million‑dot vari‑angle touchscreen. A new COLOR button provides fast switching between Picture Style, Color Filter, and Custom Picture. There are dual card slots—CFexpress 2.0 Type B (VPG400) and SD UHS‑II—plus Canon’s Multi‑Function Shoe for advanced audio and accessory support. The shutter is rated to 500,000 cycles, the chassis uses magnesium alloy with a layered heat‑dissipation structure, and the design is dust and water resistant. Power is via the high‑output LP‑E6P battery with USB‑C PD charging and power, and the camera supports the BG‑R20/BG‑R20EP battery grips. Connectivity covers 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth LE, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), wired Camera Connect for iPhone and Android, FTP and Content Transfer Mobile workflows, and UVC/UAC streaming up to 4K.

Alongside the camera, Canon is launching the RF45mm F1.2 STM, a compact, lightweight standard prime that brings the look and light‑gathering of f/1.2 to a broader audience. Weighing about 346 g and measuring 75 mm in length, the lens uses a fixed‑length barrel and front‑focusing design with a gear‑type STM motor for fast, accurate autofocus. A large‑diameter PMo aspherical element contributes to sharp rendering, while the nine‑blade circular aperture produces soft, rich bokeh at wide apertures. The 45 mm focal length aims for a more natural perspective versus traditional 50 mm standards, well suited to portraits, snapshots, and landscapes. Minimum focus is 0.45 m with 0.13× magnification, and Canon’s Super Spectra Coating helps suppress flare and ghosting; Focus Breathing Correction is supported on select EOS R bodies.

In Hong Kong, the EOS R6 Mark III body is listed at HK$19,280, with kit options at HK$27,480 for the RF24‑105mm F4 L IS USM and HK$21,680 for the RF24‑105mm F4‑7.1 IS STM. The RF45mm F1.2 STM is priced at HK$3,280, and both products are expected to reach retail by the end of November.
