Malaysia’s Puspakom Deploys AI-Assisted Undercarriage Inspection, Cutting Vehicle Check Time by Nearly 90%

Malaysia’s national vehicle inspection agency Puspakom has introduced the country’s first AI-assisted undercarriage inspection technology, cutting the time needed to inspect a commercial vehicle’s undercarriage from around 10 minutes to about one minute. The system was showcased at the launch of Jelajah Malaysia Digital 2026, and was developed with Malaysian technology company Keymag Sdn Bhd.

Key Takeaways

  • Puspakom’s AI-assisted undercarriage inspection cuts inspection time from about 10 minutes to roughly one minute, a reduction of nearly 90%
  • The system uses intelligent image analysis to detect corrosion, oil leaks, brake faults, axle defects and structural damage
  • AI serves as a decision-support tool only; final pass or fail decisions remain with human Vehicle Examiners
  • The technology is currently deployed on Puspakom’s Mobile Truck Service for heavy commercial vehicles

What was announced

Puspakom showcased the AI-assisted undercarriage inspection technology at the launch of Jelajah Malaysia Digital 2026. Developed in collaboration with Malaysian technology firm Keymag Sdn Bhd, the system uses intelligent image analysis to automate vehicle component and defect detection.

According to Puspakom, the system can detect defects such as corrosion, oil leaks, brake system faults, axle defects and structural damage with greater consistency than manual inspection.

Faster inspections, higher capacity

The biggest improvement is speed. Puspakom says an AI-assisted undercarriage inspection takes about one minute, compared to around 10 minutes previously, reducing the time required by nearly 90 percent. Besides reducing the time commercial vehicles spend undergoing inspections, the faster process allows Puspakom to inspect more vehicles each hour, which could increase service capacity and reduce waiting times.

Human examiners keep final say

Importantly, the AI does not decide whether a vehicle passes or fails its inspection. Instead, it serves as a decision-support tool, while the final pass or fail decision remains solely with Puspakom’s human Vehicle Examiners.

Puspakom CEO Mahmood Razak Bahman said AI is enabling the agency to redefine how vehicle inspections are conducted, improving operational efficiency and inspection consistency without compromising the integrity of statutory vehicle inspections. He added that the technology delivers tangible value to commercial vehicle drivers whose livelihoods depend on productivity.

The AI-assisted undercarriage inspection system is currently deployed on Puspakom’s Mobile Truck Service (MTS) for heavy commercial vehicles.
