Spotify Introduces AI Persona Labels to Flag AI-Generated Artists, Excludes Them From Recommendations

Spotify has announced a new “AI Persona” labeling system that will identify artist accounts created using generative AI. The move adds a layer of transparency to music profiles that present themselves as human but are actually AI-generated creations.

Key Takeaways

  • Spotify is introducing AI Persona badges to label artist accounts that are not real people
  • Artists can self-declare as AI Personas starting August 11 through the Spotify for Artists portal
  • Content from AI Personas will be excluded from Spotify’s personalized recommendation tools by default
  • The labels will begin appearing in mid-September on mobile, across artist profiles, search, and playlists

The new AI Persona system works in two ways. Starting August 11, artist accounts can voluntarily declare themselves as AI Personas through the Spotify for Artists portal. Additionally, Spotify will use a combination of human review and AI-powered detection to apply a “Likely AI Persona” badge to artists it believes are not real. Affected accounts will be notified and can appeal if they believe the label was applied in error.

The AI Persona label will begin appearing in mid-September, initially on mobile. It will show up on an artist’s profile page, in search results, and on playlists’ track rows.

AI content pushed out of recommendations

A significant consequence of the AI Persona designation is that content from labeled accounts will, by default, not appear in Spotify’s personalized recommendation tools. This means AI-generated music will be absent from features like Discover Weekly and Release Radar unless users actively seek it out.

The policy reflects Spotify’s balancing act in the AI era. The platform has been expanding its toolkit of generative and agentic AI features for both artists and listeners, while simultaneously strengthening its ability to identify and manage AI-generated content. The goal is to protect human creators and preserve the listening experience users expect from the service.
