Quake Ported to Safe Rust, Playable in Browser
The 1996 classic shooter Quake now runs in the browser through the QUAKE·SRP project: written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, it plays instantly in a tab with no installs, supporting keyboard, mouse, and gamepads — plus loading players’ own asset files for the base game and both official mission packs.
- Quake ported to WebAssembly in safe Rust; playable in-browser with no installs
- Supports the base campaign plus Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity mission packs
- Dual presets: Classic (faithful to id’s WinQuake behavior) and Slop (WASD, mouselook, gamepad)
- Full console support: cheat codes, level select, quicksave, and port-specific wasm commands
- Players supply their own .pak asset files; saves persist and CD music can be loaded as OGG
Two presets: 1996 authenticity or modern feel
QUAKE·SRP ships two presets. Classic reproduces id Software’s original WinQuake behavior exactly — arrow-key movement, no mouselook, always-run off — for the authentic 1996 feel. Slop is the modern preset: WASD movement, mouselook, wheel weapon switching, and full gamepad support (left stick to move, right stick to look, triggers to fire). Keys and options carry across both presets, switchable or resettable at any time from the console.
Bring your own files: three campaigns and CD music
QUAKE·SRP asks players to supply assets from a game they own. Adding the base game’s id1/pak1.pak unlocks episodes two through four; dropping in a mission pack’s hipnotic/pak0.pak or rogue/pak0.pak enables Scourge of Armagon or Dissolution of Eternity; CD music can be loaded as OGG files. Saves persist in the page’s storage, and a bookmark can target a specific mission pack to start there. The console supports id’s classic commands — god, noclip, impulse 9, map for level jumps — plus a port-specific wasm command set.
Technically, the port is written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, running inside the browser. For fans of ’90s shooters, opening a tab is now among the lightest ways to play Quake.
